Braintree MP Brooks Newmark met with leaders of the Al Falah Braintree Islamic Centre earlier this evening after the alleged incident and was quick to thank police for a swift response.

He wrote on his Twitter page: "Just met with leaders of local mosque in Braintree which was attacked this evening.

"Thanked local police for their swift response."

Witnesses reported scores of police at the scene.

It came hours after a man, reportedly a serving soldier, was killed in Woolwich, south east London in what is believed to have been a terrorist attack.
