CRICKET cheat Mervyn Westfield has been jailed for four months for spot-fixing at the Old Bailey today.

In an explosive day in court, former teammate and Pakistan leg spinner Danish Kaniera was named as the man who “corrupted” the ex-Essex fast bowler.

The court also heard that Kaneira’s boasts about making money from corrupt book makers was an open secret in the Essex changing room.

In statements read to the court, coach Paul Grayson admitted that he had heard rumours that Kaneria had asked players if they wanted to meet bookies.

And former captain, Mark Pettini, said that the Pakistani had talked in front of him, vice-captain James Foster, and opening bowler David Masters about how he knew people who would “pay considerable money to influence matches”.

Westfield, 23, had accepted £6,000 to concede a certain amounts of runs in his opening over during a one day match against Durham in 2009.

Essex Cricket Chief Executive David East said the club would make a statement later today. “We need time to digest the verdict,” he said.
