HEYBRIDGE Swifts have made one of their most important signings for a long time with the vastly experienced keeper Nick Eyre agreeing to join the Scraley Road outfit.
"It's a big and important signing for us but I'm delighted Nick has agreed to join us," said manager Mark Hawkes.
"He has tremendous experience and a pedigree to match and will be a great asset to the first team squad."
Hawkes knows that Swifts' goalkeeping position has been a problem area for the side ever since the competent end experienced Ollie Morris-Sanders retired in May 2011 to take up refereeing.
"It's naturally a key position in any side and with Nick coming in and with all his experience it should give us a sound platform at the back," he said.
Eyre, who has said he's delighted at the move to Swifts, will certainly help the team being re-built by Hawkes in a concerted effort to make the Ryman League Division One North play-offs.
A former young professional at Spurs, Eyre represented England at both schoolboy and U17 levels and played mainly in the Reserves at White Hart Lane with a total of 15 appearances. He went on to play Conference level football for Grays Athletic where he picked up an FA Trophy winners' medal.
He gained further experience with the former Rushden & Diamonds FC where he played 25 games and was also called up for the England C side.
He later moved on to Dagenham & Redbridge in the Conference and helped them win the league and gain promotion to the Football League.
Eyre most recently played for Bishop's Stortford in the Blue Square Conference South winning both the fans and players' player of the season
in 2008/09 season having been made club captain mid way
through October 2009.
More recently played briefly for Chelmsford City and having played over 200 games at a high
level of non league football he's now decided to step down two levels to play for Swifts.
Hawkes meanwhile, continues his search for other potential new players to again strengthen the Scraley Road squad ahead of the new season.
The club have also confirmed seven pre-season friendly matches including the usual curtain raiser at home against Colchester Utd on Saturday, July 14.
Other home matches are against Billericay Town (July 17) and Bishop's Stortford (July 24) before an away game at Wivenhoe Town (July 26) followed by a trip to Felixstowe & Walton Tuesday, July 31.
The remaining games are at home to a Dagenham & Redbridge XI on Saturday, August 4 and away to Ryman League Premier Division outfit Canvey Island on August 11.
The new Ryman league figures are expected to be out during the second week of July.
