Christmas is a time of celebration and relaxation – but it can also be a lot of hassle. There’s the turkey to think about, not to mention spending time with the in-laws and making small talk with people you only see once a year.

That’s why more and more people are choosing to travel abroad. But just because you’re out of the country doesn’t mean you want to abandon all Christmas traditions.

Here are our tips to make sure your festive trip keeps all of the best bits from Christmas at home, but without any of the fuss.

Food and drink

Christmas dinner is the king of all meals – and that’s without mentioning the mince pies, mulled wine and brandy snaps that accompany it. Just because you are enjoying your holiday in the sun doesn’t mean you have to go without. You can find 90% of all your seasonal favourites in supermarkets around the world, regardless of the country’s religion.

If you’re after some winter sun in popular European holiday spots then you are likely to find ex-pat restaurateurs serving up the turkey roast with all the trimmings. Booking cheap Tenerife holidays means guaranteed sun to open your presents under – although you might want to go forgo the traditional trimmings for a nice salad or Mediterranean vegetables due to the unseasonal warmth.

Friends and family

Christmas is all about friends and family, so make sure they book places on your holiday as well! Planning in advance is the key here. Don’t be afraid to start asking who’s interested in coming a year in advance; it’s best to get everyone on board before you commit any time or money.

Presents

We all love to receive a good present from our loved ones at Christmas but getting that gift to your dream destination can be tricky. As long as it is not an animal or a car, heading somewhere in Europe will allow you to take most gifts with you.

Alternatively, why not make a trip like a Turkey holiday the actual present? With long, dark winter nights, the gift of sun, like the great weather you can expect on your Lanzarote holidays, probably beats a pair of socks hands down on Christmas Day!

Christmas TV

Unfortunately not all countries are as blessed as we are with television channels. To ensure your Christmas family viewing isn’t disrupted you might need to invest in a few festive box sets or DVDs. If there is anything scheduled to air while you’re away, like the Downton Abbey Christmas special, then why not set it up to record in your absence? That way you can enjoy it on your return, making your Christmas experience even more enjoyable and, most importantly, stress free.

However if you are still dreaming of a white Christmas, planning ahead for next spring and summer and booking a break, like a Rhodes holiday; should definitely go down well on the big day when you present your loved one with the booking confirmation.
