Paul Robinson, 39, of Robinson’s Catering in Moulsham Street for the last 15 years, is giving brave would-be participants 15 minutes to eat an 18oz three-quarter pounder burger with cheese and bacon, a mound of chips, onion rings, salad and a sausage in one sitting.

The shop opened yesterday, a Sunday, for the first time in its 64-year history, just for the challenge.

“I don’t actually think anyone will finish it,” he said, despite telling the Chronicle the task was “easy” two weeks ago.

“But anyone can come in and take on the challenge, just turn up. We should get lots of challengers because I’ve had lots of people ask me about the poster in the window. It’s attracted so much attention.

“If anyone does do it I’ll shake their hand.”

Scott Rodwell was the first customer to brave the test, inspired by the US TV show, when it kicked off on Sunday.

He was also the first to fail emphatically, eating just half of the burger itself.

Between mouthfuls the 35-year-old, of Stapleford Close, Chelmsford, said: “Paul said do I fancy doing it and I said yes why not.

“I did get my mate, Daniel Harwood, to do it too but he hasn’t turned up.

“It tastes nice but that taste is all merging into one. It’s just like a big blob of taste.”

The Man vs Food portion, which Paul says is usually worth £14.50, costs contestants £9.50.

Those who finish it earn 50 per cent off their next meal and their name scribbled on the shop’s “Wall of Fame”.
