PANCAKES were the order of the day at Freeport as students celebrated Shrove Tuesday.
Tutti Tuscan Grille at Freeport Shopping Centre hosted students from Maltings Academy in Witham and Tabor Science College in Braintree as they went head to head in a pancake race.
Despite the cold weather, the runners brought supporters to encourage them along the 100m.
Restaurant manager Lorna Evans said: "I think they had a great time – we have done a lot of events with Tabor and they enjoy it because it gets them out of school and doing something a bit different."
The contest was later opened to members of the public, one of whom won a VIP Valentine's meal.
And by the end of the day, staff at the restaurant were left to polish off the last of the snacks
The event raised funds for the Polly Parrot Appeal for Basildon and Thurrock Hospital's children's ward.
Rob Reeley, Tutti Grille managing director, said: "We love to get involved with the local community so this seemed like a great thing to do. We hope to raise as much money as possible for the appeal."
