Shire Hall, Chelmsford.

THE Chronicle would like to know what readers would do with Shire Hall, Chelmsford's iconic city centre building.

It has been used as a magistrates court, but it effectively closed its doors to the public when the £4 million court opened in nearby New Street earlier this year.

The council is undecided on its future, so we are conducting an online poll to find out what you would do with the Georgian pile.

An Essex County Council spokesman said: "We are considering the potential options for it, but no decision has been made yet. We will ensure that any solution is good value for money, allows access for the local community, and keeps it in public ownership."

The building was completed in 1791 to the design of county surveyor John Johnson.

It has remained almost the same for more than 200 years, with the exception of the main staircase, which was replaced in the 1930s.

How about an arts centre with a permanent picture gallery, temporary space for local artists and an auditorium for a string quartet? Certainly fit for a City.

Tourist information Centre with ticket agency for all Essex Events and Booking agency for Theatre and such like. Additional space for café/restaurant of Essex manufactures and grown products with extra space for small retail businesses needing a city centre market but not able to afford a whole unit/shop.
